Introduction written by the artist
I Love Tian'anmen in Beijing , Wowzah~ , Birth and Destruction and 2008 are all digital art works constructed by millions of pixels. A pixel, the word based on a contraction of pix ("pictures") and el ("element"), is the smallest item of information in a digital image. From a simple goofy image in a video game years ago to a high-resolution picture taken by a digital camera nowadays, pixel is the very basis for any visual wonder people ever experienced in the digital era. If a portion of an image was greatly enlarged, the individual pixels would be rendered as litt le squares and could easily be seen. Doing arts with those tiny squares, to me, is more like a child playing Lego.
I Love Tian'anmen in Beijing
It is almost a cliché to put Tian'anmen square in an art work in modern China, even for some famous works. However, from none of them I can see a true Tian'anmen, at least the one in my mind. Through my work, I want to create a comprehensive image of this sacred place, a Tian'anmen that includes all those important events happened there before today. Although there is 500-hundred-year history in this work and many historic events in Ming dynasty and Qing dynasty are included, my real focus is on the post-empire age, especially the age after 1949, in which many remarkable things have happened and shaped the modern China the way it is. I do not want to draw something irrelevant to present China or just carelessly using Tian'anmen as a symbol, which we have seen enough in many other works.
Wowzah~
Wowzah~ was created in 2007 to show the rock'n roll histroy in China. I used to like rock'n roll, about a decade and some years ago. That was a passionate time. Nothing is the same nowadays. Rock'n roll today is not the one in the past, not the one that I can recognize. I intend to use this work to demonstrate the end of an era. In the material society we live in today, everything is valued by its price. Therefore, rock'n roll, the music once r epresenting rebellion, youth rage and other precious things that I can not even name of, has become a fake pose to change for money. OK. I should not complain, as the same thing happened in modern art area also. Sometimes I wonder, "Would I be willing to put so much time and effort to draw a picture if I knew for sure no one was going to buy it?" It's hard to give a clear answer, but my passion would be less if there is no money, that's for sure. It really needs some character and guts to be an artist without any income. How to truly face yourself, especially to face your desires, is always an important theme in any arts.
Birth and Destruction
Birth and Destruction was created in 2008, the year many people were trying to hold on in stock market and finally fell. Human being is not very smart creature. For what purpose we insanely expand our ma terial civilization? Would the desire to maximize our interest casue the very opposite? My work was trying to ask these questions, not to answer. I remember I come across a article talking about the earth after human. It estimates that most cities would be taken over by forests rapidly and nearly not a single trace of human civilization could be found after 10 thousands years. Another 10 thousands years later, only the residues of atomic reactor could show that there had been some kind of unnatural thing happened. Just like depicted in this work, no matter how high a skyscraper can be built, it would collapse one day. The chain of civilization is so fragile......People, once who have souls, have been "alienated" to construction materials for the skyscraper. What even worse is that the base of the skyscraper is on a tilting see-saw.
2008
At the end of 2008, when the unusual year coming to its end, I was coming to believe that this year would be brought up again and again in the future, not only for all those significant events happened, but also for the feeling of change was beginning to be realized in this year. A new page of history has be turned by an invisible hand......2008 includes the important events happened in the world and the interest things happened around me, e.g. me being caught in 798 district by security guys. Most things represented in this work were happened in China. It's more like a personal documentary of the year 2008.
I just noticed recently that I had always been worrying too much, like being afraid the sky would fall someday. In retrospect, I guess I am one of those conceited guys who always think they know more and they know better. But think about that, what a cool thing to be a prophet saving the whole world from a crisis! Can I work on my problem and be a better person? Who knows? Let the time tell. Who can beat the time anyway?
Congratulations! Please accept my respect for finishing reading this introduction. I never believe what artists say about their works.
